City of Ontario Emergency Information Portal under development.

RESCUE’s SAMI (Situational Awareness from Multimodal Input) project will co-develop an Emergency Information Portal (EIP) for the City of Ontario, in collaboration with the Ontario Fire Department (OFD). The EIP is intended to provide citizens and responders real-time access to information related to disasters and emergency situations in or around the City of Ontario, in a convenient manner over the Internet. A prototype version of the system is expected to have features such as Web-based access to important web links and maps for the City of Ontario, mechanisms for publishing information such as local emergency shelters and their current status, and an online system for managing donations and aid offers in the case of an emergency. This development is expected to begin in January 2006 and will involve RESCUE staff and students, and staff from the IT and GIS departments at the OFD.

Many of the advanced capabilities of interest for this EIP are synergistic with the ongoing research within the SAMI effort. The key technologies are expected to be in areas such as web-based access, databases, search, and GIS systems.

Jacob Green, an alumnus of UCI and project RESCUE, now an Analyst with the OFD, has been the key champion in initiating the collaboration between RESCUE and the OFD. According to Jacob, “The Emergency Information Portal will allow our City to communicate vital information instantaneously to all members of the community. The partnership between the City and the University represents a collaborative effort to ensure that the citizens of Ontario are provided with the highest level of public safety and disaster preparedness.” Naveen Ashish, SAMI project lead says that "the EIP is a unique opportunity to transit some of the information processing and GIS research ongoing in SAMI and RESCUE into a real world application that may ultimately be used by citizens and responders.”

More information will be available shortly at the RESCUE and the new SAMI websites.
